I had always heard people talk about Greece as the perfect summer holiday destination. Surprisingly, that made us hesitant to choose it.
With so much overtourism, the idea of being stuck in crowded places like Santorini or Mykonos didn’t sound appealing. Plus, picking the right island seemed overwhelming—there were so many options, and we had no idea where to start.
Year after year, we kept putting off the idea. But one rainy afternoon while cycling home from work (typical British weather), I found myself dreaming of the perfect summer getaway: peaceful island vibes with hikes, scooter rides, lazy beach days, sunsets, good food, and long relaxing mornings.
Maybe Greece was worth a second thought. After a quick shower, I sat down at my laptop to search for the differences between the islands. They all looked beautiful, and choosing just one felt impossible.
Talking to my Greek colleagues didn’t help, they each insisted their island was the best. More confused than ever, I resorted to Google and searched, “Best Greek islands, not too crowded.” One name stood out: Folegandros.

Folegandros (Greece)
When I started reading about this little island in Greece, located in the south of the Cyclades, just a short boat ride from Santorini and inhabited by only 300 people, the decision was made.
After flying to Santorini and spending the night there to catch the speedboat the following morning, we finally arrived at the port in Folegandros. The water at the port was so clear and turquoise that you could easily see why many people consider this the unspoiled gem of the Cyclades.
After a quick look around, we began hiking along the hilly road, which, after about a half-hour walk, took us to our scooter rental office (Donkey Scooter) just outside the town center, where most of the restaurants and apartments were located—Chora.

A Charming Arrival in Greece
The moment you step off the ferry at the port of Karavostasis, you sense that Folegandros is special. The island’s rugged beauty and peaceful vibe immediately set it apart from its busier neighbors. The drive up to Chora, the island’s main village, winds along steep cliffs, revealing breathtaking views of the turquoise sea.

Chora: The Heart of the Island
Perched on a cliff, Chora is one of the most picturesque villages in the Cyclades. Its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea, and cozy squares create a magical atmosphere. At sunset, locals and visitors alike gather at the panoramic spot near the church of Panagia to watch the sky turn shades of orange and pink. Don’t miss a stroll to this beautiful church, which offers the best views on the island.

Beaches for Every Mood
Folegandros may be small, but its beaches are stunning and diverse. For a serene escape, head to Agali Beach, where crystal-clear waters invite you for a refreshing dip. For something more secluded, explore Livadaki or Katergo Beach, which are accessible by boat or hiking trails. The island’s unspoiled coastline is perfect for those who love a touch of adventure.

Savoring Local Flavors
Folegandros is a food lover’s paradise. Traditional tavernas serve delicious Greek dishes with a local twist. Don’t miss “matsata,” a handmade pasta served with goat or rabbit meat, and pair it with a glass of local wine. For a sweet treat, try “karpouzopita,” a watermelon pie that’s a true island delicacy.

Hiking with a View
The island’s rugged landscape makes it a haven for hikers. Well-marked trails connect the villages and beaches, offering panoramic views of the Aegean and a chance to discover Folegandros’ wild beauty. The path from Chora to Ano Meria is particularly scenic, taking you through traditional farmlands and stunning coastal views.

The Spirit of Ano Meria
Ano Meria is a charming village where time seems to stand still. Here, you’ll find traditional stone houses and terraced fields that reflect the island’s agricultural heritage. Visit the small Folklore Museum to gain insight into Folegandros’ rural past and enjoy the village’s tranquil atmosphere.
Why Folegandros (Greece)?
What makes Folegandros truly special is its ability to balance simplicity and beauty. It’s a place where you can disconnect, enjoy nature, and experience greek island life without crowds. Whether you’re savoring a leisurely meal in Chora, hiking along dramatic cliffs, or soaking up the sun on a secluded beach, Folegandros invites you to slow down and simply be.

Final Thoughts
If you’re seeking a peaceful retreat in the Cyclades, Folegandros should be at the top of your list. It’s a hidden gem that promises unforgettable moments and a genuine connection with the natural and cultural beauty of Greece.
